ISO TC 97 becames the joint ISO/IEC Technical Committee JT1 "Information Technology"

At the January meeting of JPEG the "Moving Picture Coding Experts Group" (MPEG) and the "Joint ISO-CCITT Binary Image Coding Experts Group" (JBIG) are established
At the December MPEG meeting the first subgroup "Audio" is created

1988:
The "Coding of Moving Images for Storage" (COMIS) consortium is established (with the intention of proposing a projects to the ESPRIT program)
At the same time a project called "Digital Audio and Picture Architecture" (DAPA) is built in Japan
Some time later Eurescom Institute funded the "Interactive Multimedia Services at 1 Mbit/s" (IMS-1)

At the July MPEG meeting the second subgroup "Video" is created

At the October MPEG meeting the subgroups "System", "DSM", "VLSI", "Test" are created
The "Multimedia and Hypermedia Experts Group" (MHEG) is established within the SC 2/WG 8

First MPEG-2 session at the July MPEG meeting in Porto

Winter Olympics received full HD-MAC HDTV coverage

1993:
The European Project on Digital Broadcasting started the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) initiative
DVB will adopt MPEG-2 System/Video/Audio and develop QPSK for satellite broadcasting modulation, 64 QAM for CATV, COFDM for terrestrial television
DVB will also develop standards related to Service Information (SI) and the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP)

1994:
MPEG-2 (FD) approved at the November meeting in Singapore, many improvements such as AAC,PES/TS/PS, ECM/EMM, DSM-CC, RTI

1994:
The DVD format is defined by a number of CE manufacturers and Hollywood studios led by Toshiba and Warner Bros. (overcoming a competing format by Sony and Philips)
DVD is based on MPEG-2 (eg. use of the MPEG-2 Program Stream to store a movie)

General Instrument Digicipher II system for terrestrial HDTV broadcasting in 6Mhz US terrestrial TV

1996:
FCC selects MPEG-2 System/Video, Dolby AC-3 Audio and 8-VSB to implement digital broadcasting of HDTV on the USA terrestrial network
